Maybelline The Buffs Collection Review Lip Swatches and Mac Dupes

 If you were enchanted last year by the Maybelline Vivids collection that featured bright and bold shades this may not be a collection for you, but if you love to vary your looks or you felt that the vivids were just too VIVID you may want to check out The Buffs.

This collection makes sense coming from Maybelline, the brand that has brought us the line of Fit Me products. We can fit our foundation, our mattifyer, even our pressed powder to work perfectly for us, why not lipsticks? The Buffs collection features nude shades for every skin tone and are affordable for most budgets. It seems many companies are bringing us a very nude spring and these are a great way to stay on trend. Also, since there is a wide variation of shades you can choose a nude that works for you now or a lighter or darker one for those times when you have a tan or are a little pale.

The overall formula is consistent with  other Maybelline color sensational lipsticks in that they are soft and creamy, have a honey nectar scent, and leave a bit of shine when applied. Depending on the shade they can last from 3-6 hours.

Left Top- Bare All, Left Bottom- Nude Lust. Right Top- Blushing Beige , Right Bottom- Maple Kiss

BARE ALL- is an almost white shade that gave me (fit me 220, mac NC 30) concealer lips. This shade showed every lip flaw so it would be best to exfoliate before applying. This shade would be best for those with very fair complexions or those who want a very light lip. This shade could also be used to tone down a darker shade or applied to the center of the lip over another lipstick to highlight the center of the lip.It leans slightly yellow.

BLUSHING BEIGE- this shade is slightly darker and leans pink. It is great for those looking for a light pinky nude and it is similar to mac peachstock and mac pure decoration.

NUDE LUST- is similar to mac close contact and is a bit of a greyed pinky nude.

MAPLE KISS- is a red based medium brown that would look great if you have pigmented lips already, it may look like "your lips but better"

Left Top- Truffle Tease, Left Bottom Touchable Tuape, Right Top- Sin-A-Mon, Right Bottom- Stormy Shara

TRUFFLE TEASE AND SIN-A-MON- both look very similar to exclusive event and riri nude on the lips but they lacked some of the greyness that would make them a full dupe. These will look quite different on different skin tones. On my skin they were medium grey nudes with a bit of brown. Truffle Tease leaned more yellow while Sin-a-mon leaned more pink.

TOUCHABLE TAUPE- is a chocolate brown that has a bit of purple untertone and reminded me some of mac hot chocolate. This shade should flatter mostly any skin tone.

STORMY SHARA- is a pinky medium brown nude that would look good on medium to darker skin tones as a nude.

Top Left- Untainted Spice and Top Right- Espresso Exposed

UNTAINTED SPICE- This shade also pulls a little purple but is a medium brown (this shade also reminds me of mac hot chocolate but it isnt enough purple to be a full dupe)

ESPRESSO EXPOSE- is a darkened reddish brown that would be a great vampy shade on lighter skin tones or a rich nude on darker skintones.

 

Overall what I loved about this collection was range. I feel like with ten nude lipsticks that lean pink, yellow, brown, purple, grey, and red, it really covers a lot of different skin tones and undertones. I think that most people will be able to find a nude that fits them or even just a shade they like. The packaging is quite pretty with the soft pink shaded tubes and the shades the color of the sticker on the bottom. These shades are creamy and smell like honey nectar.

I feel like we have entered one of the most amazing time's in history for drugstore cosmetics. It is like a resonance of sorts. Cosmetic companies have heard our cry's and have started to deliver bright, bold, statement shades that we have long been craving. Maybelline has been one of the front of this movement and what better way to bring in spring than with an amazing collection- Color Goes Electric. This collection features quads, nail polish, new limited edition vivid's, glosses, and even blush! While i have already reviewed the blush here, and the glosses here, this post will focus on the two Vivid lipsticks that i picked up from this collection - Electric Fuchsia and Orange Edge! Plus i will help you to determine if you really need these shades and if you do i will show you exactly why!

First let's talk about the packaging. The new vivids collection, which by the way i thought was limited edition in and of it self, but these specifically say limited edition so are they limited, limited edition? Are the regular vivid's now their own permanent line (i can wish cant i?). These shades have bright neon caps just like the other Vivid's. This varies from the permanent line in that these do not have color specific caps. So if you are used to seeing a cap shaded to the lipstick these are not the same color as the cap (at least not all). These caps snap on to a sliver base and the name of the color is on the bottom. Second, these lipsticks do have a honey nectar scent which is sweet and not too overpowering. I did not find a weird taste at all. Some find the smell offensive or to remind them of playdoh. It is all a mindset in my opinion. If  you think of it as honey nectar it may be more appealing of a scent to you. These shades are not heavy on the lips, apply opaque in one or two swipes, last at least 5 hours on the lips, are very bright and true to the tube, plus they have a bit of gloss to them.

My only complaint about these vivids is that they are so close in shade to the existing vivid's. This is a good and bad aspect. If you were not able to find the shades you wanted from the first vivids collection you are in luck and will be able to pick up a bright pink and bright orange regardless (along with two bright reds), if you can not find these shades in your local drugstore you may not be missing out if you are able to find the regular vivids (i will explain this after the swatches) I just would have liked to see more variety.

 In the Maybelline Color Goes Electric there were four new, limited edition Vivid's released. Electric Fuchsia, Orange Edge, Pop of Cherry, and Infra-Red. While all of the shades are quite comparable to the existing Vivid's it comes down to personal preference. I personally feel there are plenty of red's in the drugstore market that makes passing on Pop of Cherry and Infra-red easy for me, especially since i personally thought there were too many reds in the original vivid's. This isn't to say that Electric Fuchsia and Orange Edge are original, they come very close to the other shades. So depending on how much you like fuchsia or orange (or red) lipstick you may be able to pass on these all together, especially if they are harder to find for you.

Electric Fuchsia  is the deepest of the three and leans the most blue, Fuchsia Flash (released with the original Vivid's) is a bright fuchsia that is just a bit lighter on the skin than Electric Fuchsia but appear the exact same on the lips. Fuchsia Fever which is part of the permanent line is the lightest of the three and also not as bright. It appears just a bit less bright on the lips as compared to the first two. All three are so similar on the lips that it is hard to tell them apart.

 Electric Orange Vs. Orange Edge Vs. Vibrant Mandarin
Unlike the fuchsia shades the oranges vary just a little bit more. If you were looking for something that was a bit more red than Electric Orange but a shade that pulls just a little more orange than Vibrant Mandarin, than you should pick up Orange Edge. Most oranges pull red on me no matter what i do and i find Electric Orange from the original vivid's to be the only shade that really pulls orange, so the other two look very similar on me. On darker skin tones the change is shade is more apparent. If you have a light skin tone Orange Edge and Vibrant Mandarin might look exactly the same.

 Overall the quality is on par with the first release of the Maybelline color sensational Vivid's. If you were a big fan of those you may want to pick these up based on that alone. If you missed out on a fuchsia shade or orange shade (or red) these shades are a good opportunity for you to still get the colors you want. If you like bright bold lipsticks at an affordable price ($7 at Duane Reade) you really cant beat these!

Maybelline Color Goes Electric Color Sensational Lip Gloss Review and Swatches

 Do you eve just wish you could find a decent drugstore (or any type!) of lip gloss that was more than a beautiful color in the tube but clear on the lips? I wish this more often than i care to admit and most times it is the reason i will pass on lip gloss all together. When i saw Maybelline's Color Goes Electric Color Sensational Lip Gloss in Mirrored Plum (bright purple) and how smooth and pigmented it was,  i was so impressed i had to go back and get them all!

The formula overall of these glossy is non sticky, does not bleed, does not settle into lines, applies evenly, and has only a light sent. Mostly opaque and semi opaque shades. 2-3 hours of wear with light eating and drinking. Many of these shades feel more like a light liquid lipstick rather than a gloss because of their high pigmentation. Applies with a doe foot applicator.

Knock Out Pearl- A sheer shimmer lavender pink gloss with a pearlesq finish. While this shade is the sheerest of the six it still has great pigmentation. Even on pigmented lips it lightens and has a nice shimmer. The shimmer is not glittery though and feels smooth on the lips. Great on its own, layered over lipstick, or liner. Goes well over most pink lipsticks or Maybelline Vivid Shocking Coral.
Mirrored Plum- Bright purple. This gloss is semi-opaque. Shiny and glossy this shade has enough color to stand on its own on bare lips. Also looks great layered over Maybelline Vivids Brazen Berry and Hot Plum.
Striking Peach- Sheer shimmer peach gloss with a pearlesq finish. This shade is also a bit sheer but still gives a lot of coverage on the lips. Lightens gives a nice smooth peach color to the lips. Can be applied over shades like Maybelline Vivids Electric Orange or Orange Edge or on its own.

Punch Of Pink- Creamy baby pink. This gloss is a full coverage without any shimmer. This shade settles slightly into the lines of the lips but only after about an hour of wear. Great to apply over Maybelline Vivids Pink Pop.
Riveting Rose- Bright fuchsia pink this shade is almost completely opaque. Is enough to wear on its own and applies very bright. This shade really does pop on the lips. Great to also wear over Maybelline Vivids Vivid Rose
Fiercely Fuchsia- Bright Fuchsia pink with violet iridescent. There is a light bit of shimmer. This color is very similar to Riveting Rose but the only difference is the slight violet reflection. This shade is great over Maybelline Vivids Fuchsia Flash.

Overall if you are looking for a gloss that packs a lot of pigment or even just a gloss that will cover your lips without settling into fine lines, bleeding, or feeling sticky this is a great choice. At only $7.99 each with above drugstore quality these feel like a steal. The only downside is that these are limited edition and can be hard to find.

Have you seen the new Limited Edition collection from Maybelline? Color Goes Electric features on trend bright, bold, and vivid colors inspired by New York Fashion week Spring 2013. Something you normally wouldn't expect from a drugstore brand but Maybelline finally gets what a large majority of ladies want! This collection includes some beautiful new Vivid Lipsticks, Blushes, Polishes, Quads, and even Glosses that rival MAC! So are you ready for some pop's of color?

Maybelline Color Goes Electric Blush in Wild Blossom, Golden Fuse, and Coral Burst

There are three limited edition blushes from Maybelline Color Goes Electric. Each blush has a baked formula. What impressed me most is for a drugstore brand these blushes were neither too soft or too hard and had minimal fallout. The pigmentation was over and beyond what i expected to see as well. They are quite small and you must be easy opening the top. Sometimes the top sticks and makes dropping these or chipping the blush easy. While i think these colors would be universally flattering on any skin tone, some may not be as daring. As a guide i would suggest that Wild Blossom might look better on lighter skin tones, Golden Fuse would look great on a medium or tan skin tone, and Coral Burst might look best on tan to darker colored tone. Either way these  shades can be built up or blended out. I got about 6 hours of wear on the cheek but i did prime my face and applied foundation under it. Each shade has a bit of a frosty finish with Golden Fuse having the most. These shades are limited edition and can be found in most drugstores for about $7.

Here i am wearing Wild Blossom on my cheeks, Golden Fuse to highlight on my nose, chin, and forehead, along with wearing Maybelline Color Goes Electric Vivid's in Electric Fuchsia. On my eyes i am wearing Going in the Wild by Wet n Wild.

Overall these blushes are high quality at a great brand. The ability to blend them out or build them up makes them versatile for bold looks and also looks with just a pop of color. Universally flattering but also a shade for every skin tone. Great formula with minimal fallout. The only downside is these shades are limited edition. Check out the Maybelline website here!

Maybelline Color Sensational Vivds collection (MAC Strength Dupes) Review and Swatches

2013 seems to be starting off with a bang! So many great collections drugstore and high end a like. If you think back to the end of December MAC released the strength collection. It pretty much sold like hot cakes. I guess Maybelline finally started to pay attention to what girls really want (not that we don't like the classic drugstore shades they just sometimes come off as repetitive and sheer). While many of the shades you are about to see might not be exactly work friendly these shades are very much a refreshing addition to the otherwise "normal" shades currently offered.
 

Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid's is a collection of shades ranging from purple all the way to rich reds. These shades are very pigmented, bright, and borderline neon. Unlike the rest of Maybelline's Color Sensational lipsticks which gives different colors, different tubes, Vivid's are all contained to bright, neon orange, plastic tubes. The color is indicated via stickers on the bottom. The formula is smooth and moisturizing and very light on the lips. These smell like honey nectar which you may either love or hate. Some have likened it to sweet baked goods while others have said it reminds them of plastic. If you can, smell one first to see where you land on that spectrum. While these do have a scent there is no strange taste. These lipsticks do not bleed onto the lips and with the exception of Pink Pop they are not streaky nor do they bleed. The best wearing shades in this collection are the reds (vibrant Mandarin, Neon Red, On Fire Red), the worst wearing shade is Pink Pop, the most safe for work appropriate color is Shocking Coral, the best for fun shades are Brazen Berry, Wild Rose, and Neon Orange.

 If you would like to compare this collection to the MAC strength collection, you can replace Fuchsia Flash for Pink Pigeon, Shocking Coral for Party Parrot, On Fire Red for Absolute Power, and Brazen Berry for Strong Woman. They are almost dupes except for the fact that MAC Strength contained only matte shades and Maybelline Vivids contains shades that have more of a satin and glossy finish. Overall i thought this was a great way to spice up things in the drugstore. It was nice to see a drugstore brand like Maybelline take the leap into brighter, more on trend shades. For girls who cant get their hands on MAC this is a great option. The only downside to this collection is that it is limited edition but i haven't had too much of a hard time finding it in my local stores, it is at Walmart.com and in Walmart stores. I have heard that there are a limited amount of each shade per store so if you see a color you may like pick it up before its gone!
