MAC Ruffian Lipstick Collection Review and Swatches

If you follow MAC closely this is a little bit of old news for you, if you don't i will quickly recap. MAC teamed up with the design house Ruffian to create a fashion forward and runway inspired collection. This collection unlike most MAC collection includes press on nails. These press on nails are not your average drugstore design but range from black matte/gold to pointy red/white/black. I choose to pass on these and opted for the lipsticks, which there were only three of. If you would like to check it out before it is gone please click here!

Ruffian MAC lipsticks come in three fantastic, classic, colors. Red, Gold, and Naked. These colors, although released in the summer, are intended for fall and with the range of the three colors you can have a nice transition. I thought of how leaves change color. These lipsticks have the classic vanilla scent that doesn't over power and doesn't have a weird taste. The tubes are classic MAC tubes, the only special packaging is on the cardboard these lipsticks come in. There is a designed box that the lipstick box slides into. The outer box has the color name on it along with printed on white ruffles. It is pretty cute. While i do like special tubes, i feel like they kept it classier by just keeping it the sleek, black, matte tubes we are used to and adding flair to the packaging.

The color i was most excited about was MAC Ruffian Gold. Before i go on, i have to say i really hate when i see other blogs and the swatches are just one swipe. It doesn't show accurate color payoff and i almost didn't buy this collection after viewing some. My swatches are all at least 3 swipes and i always mention if its streaky or opaque and how many swipes are needed to achive the color. Yes, so anyway, MAC Ruffian Gold is a frost color so you can not expect it to go on opaquely or highly pigmented. What you can expect is a high shimmer gold color that is perfect on its own to brighten up your lips or to apply over other colors. This lipstick can be used as a luminanizer. I personally like it on its own and i applied about 3 swipes to each lip.

The next shade is MAC Ruffian Naked. This is a matte nude. It leans more on the tan side with slight pink undertones. If you are looking for a pinky nude this is not it. Depending on your skin tone this may look like concealer on the lips so don't forget to line and don't forget to define the area outside of your lips before applying. I did not do that in these swatches. To define the outside area of your lips use concealer and face power to smooth the area around your upper and bottom lip, apply lip liner as an outline and fill in your lips with Naked. If you are using nude lipstick you can go for very dramatic eyes, smokey, or even colorful. This shade is very opaque, very pigmented, and non streaky. You will need only about 2 swipes for full coverage.

Lastly there is MAC Ruffian Red. This is a bright, fire engine, red that is also matte. This beautiful color goes on evenly, opaquely and needs only one swipe. I love how pigmented it is. Matte colors are the best for defining lips. Since i have small lips it is easier to make them look bigger and more full with this color. This is your average red color but much better quality than any red i own or have tried. So if you want that one red to really stand out in your collection, or for special occasions, this is perfect.
